To quote the late lamented Douglas Adams: Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space.”
Just place the word ‘space’ with the word ‘SAN’ and the concept of ‘big’ with ‘bigger than we expected’.
And this is wonderful. It’s amazing. SAN is genuinely an enthusiastic, vibrant, exciting place to be at the moment and that’s because of everybody involved in it.
However, the sheer unexpected size of SAN has thrown up a couple of issue. Most of them go without saying but, heh, it looks like we’re saying them anyway. We’re not trying to tell individual bloggers how to behave or what to write about but do bear in mind that while you’re in SAN, because we are a big amorphous leader-less entity, the actions of individuals will reflect on the group as a whole.
RP Servers and Not Freaking Out
I know being in an RP server is a little bit alien to most of us – and also that getting involved in RP might not be something that interests you. And equally there will be slightly disorientating moments when you stumble across two lesbian Tauren entwined in the heat of Sapphic lust when all you wanted was seven intact plainstrider beaks. However, as much as we joke about bisexual half-demon half-vampire daughters of Illidan this is actually a stereotype – and, like most stereotypes, verging on the downright offensive. And, when you get right down it, there’s actually nothing inherently wrong with playing a bisexual half-demon half-vampire daughters of Illidan if that’s what you really want – it just seems a bit ridiculous to rest of us who are not 16. However, WoW is a big world and it’s not our place to invalidate the play of other people, as long as it is not actively harmful.
There’s a little note on the bottom of the guild rules about respecting the RP server rules. These may be condensed down to:
1) don’t be a dick.
If you see RP going on, even if it is the silly dancing naked on a mailbox variety, feel free to watch it but don’t disrupt it in any way. If you get an interesting invitation, politely decline and walk away. Feel free to lol about it in g-chat but there is actually no need to mess up someone else’s game. And please be aware that undermining or demeaning other people’s play is actually a form of griefing. Don’t be a troll, mon.
Equally there’s no obligation to get involved in RP at all – just see the players as particularly detailed NPCs and continue grinding mobs.
If you do want to get into RP there are some quite sophisticated rules surrounding it. Both EU and US SAN contain some RP veterans so feel free to ask for advice in guild chat.
Otherwise good places for advice and information would be:

failpug.blogspot.com/2010/03/introduction-to-roleplaying-part-1.html (part 1 of a series)
Talking Shop
Needless to say, bloggers will eventually get down to talking about blogs. 99.9% of the time this is fantastic. Obviously there will be some blogs you like, some blogs you don’t. We don’t all just have to get along – in a community as talkative like SAN there will likely be debate, there will likely be disagreement, there will likely be the occasional misplaced temper, and this is no bad thing. But if you do get into an argument with someone on your blog, remember they are likely currently the elf quietly gathering silverleaf. No matter what our disagreements, we are still the same community.
And equally although there are certain bloggers whose philosophies and attitudes might be seen as antithetical to SAN, although the occasional light hearted remark is inevitable … remember that this person IS a person, not a target dummy.
If anybody has any ideas of how we could better accommodate the RP community and keep things in perspective between ourselves please add them to this thread.
Thanks for reading all. May your ancestors be praised.
