I'm normally from an RP server, so I'm used to the way they do things there... I'll speak in character on occasion, but I don't go out of my way to put together anything more formal. It's just that any backstory I invent for my characters is merely a way for me to justify whatever I feel like doing in-game at the time.
The only characters I had that ever had a backstory were my priest and paladin/death knight on my old server, but even then, it was only ever known to me.

I'm trying to get my head around who my characters actually *is* before I dive in to RP...
I'd also longed to roll on an RP server but was put off by a) not knowing anyone who played there, b) reading some (scarily) heavy RP guidelines and c) not wanting to inadvertantly wreck anyone's immersion.
As to the walking thing, I am walking in cities. It's an eyeopener.

Generally I think as long as you are making an effort and trying your best not to l33tspk or discuss real life issues in /s, you will do ok.
I quite like diving into RP and seeing how my character evolves as I play them, then again I am slightly impulsive!

I don't think íll be actively RPing, but i will try to RP a bit if someone does it to me...
Last night was my first rp experience. I was outside Silvermoon City and i saw a female belf hunter walking around with her pet, and she had this awesome looking gear on. As she was only in the 30's i knew it wasnt a set, but gear carefully put together purely for the looks. I stopped, turned around, and inspected her gear, which was a mix of greys, commons, greens and blues, most of them having nothing to do with the class, or not even leather gear. Like i said, purely for aesthetics. I thought it was wonderful that someone had put in so much work to create an outfit for looks like that.
Then she spooked my by RPing to me: <char> squints her eyes while observing you watching her <char> says: What?
I wasnt exactly sure what to do or say, but ended up with: Riccah wisthles at <char> Riccah is deeply admiring the sexy outfit Riccah says: You look great.
Well, she thanked me, and i went on my way. All in all, i thought it was a great experience!

Fashion is the one thing I love about RP servers compared to PVE ones. I'm not "into" fashion IRL, but I'm a girl, so I love love love seeing interesting and well thought-out outfits. I ran into 2 belf pallies the other day wearing some sort of set - black and red and absolutely awesome looking.

For me it is simply a matter of habit, I'm also on an RP server with my main so I do my best to leave things like emoticons and abbreviations and references to game mechanics out of my /say

I might take Meja or Kaindah (also known as H) for a spin in the RP wagon. I write novels in my free time as well as play D&D so the storyline and what not is always right under the surface.

I have a background and general idea of the type my character is when I create it. Thus I'm already getting 'into the skin' of that character before I even set his foot (or hoof) into the ground.
Currently I have a solid background to my Tauren and another for the Troll (which has to migrate to Mulgore to be in his), so I'm open for RP at any instance.
In gchat I'm ooc always, but in /s and /p I try to be as much in char as possible.
Earlier we had a small group of 5 in a RPPVP server and on one occasion we took on chatting in character in /s and admired one elf's mechanohog. After he departed, I got a whisper from him, thanking for the rp which was so seldom seen on the server.
Needless to say, we took up from that and changed from /p to /s everywhere... and caused some really nice rp events just by 'living it up' in the game.
So I'm going to keep this appearance in here, too. Just because it was so darn fun.
